Interviews at tech companies can be a bit intimidating - they shouldn’t be. We’re Mairéad Murphy(opens new window), Lead Designer, and Karwai Ng(opens new window), Senior UX Researcher. We want to let you in on our approach to hiring to give you the best chance to shine in our interviews and showcase what you can bring to Multiverse.

How we hire at Multiverse

Our hiring process starts with a call with a recruiter. Our team of recruiters are great - they’ll support you throughout the interview process. In this initial call, you’ll learn more about life at Multiverse and assess if this would be the right role for you. They’ll give you some more insight into the Multiverse mission, the role, our team, and our culture. They’ll also answer any questions you might have.

From there, we have four interview stages:

  1. The hiring manager screen where we want to get to know you better
  2. A case study presentation where we want to see how you approach problem-solving
  3. A “culture add” interview where you’ll speak to a leader in our ProdTech team about what you’ll bring to the role
  4. Finally, an interview with our founder, Euan Blair

Let’s delve a bit deeper into the stages:

Initial hiring manager call

In our first stage, you’ll be speaking with the hiring manager for the role. In this call, we’re looking to do three things:

  • Get to know you, what drives you, and why you’re interested in Multiverse
  • Hear about your process, principles, and skills as a designer or researcher
  • Answer your questions about Multiverse and chat about the impact you could have here

Tips

  • Think about what aspects of our work excite you and how your skills align to that. Have a look through our website and read some of our blog posts to get an idea of what’s going on in the business right now.
  • We’ll have a few “tell me about a time...” questions. We want to hear about things you’ve done, projects you’ve worked on, and the results you helped to achieve. It’s helpful to think about how you structure your answers here. For example, the STAR method(opens new window) can help highlight your achievements in a clear and concise way.
  • Be yourself! We know it’s a bit cheesy, but we’d love to learn more about you - what makes you tick, what you’re passionate about, and what makes you you.

Case study presentation

Next, we want to see how you’ve tackled a project in the past. You’ll have the chance to review it with 3 members of the team (from design, research, product, or engineering).

We make sure that you meet different interviewers at every stage. This means we get a well-rounded picture of who you are. It also gives you a chance to meet more of the people who you’ll actually be working with.

The case study presentation allows us to get an idea of:

  • Your approach to problem solving and research / design process
  • How you use research insights to drive design / product decisions
  • How you collaborate with cross-functional team members
  • How you think about driving impact through your work
  • Your presentation and communication skills

Tips

  • We encourage you to read Rachel’s article and choose an example that best showcases the qualities we’re looking to discuss
  • Remember to hide all sensitive company data and personal information of research participants

“Culture add” interview

Hiring the best people is foundational to our success as a business. Everyone will go through a “culture add” interview with a senior member of the team they’re applying for, whether for design, user research, engineering, or any other role. We’ll look to understand what you’ll bring to our team, in terms of how your approach aligns with our mission and values.

This might be with our VP of Engineering, Sachin(opens new window), our VP of Product, Emma(opens new window), our Director of Engineering, Theo(opens new window), or our Director of Product, Darius(opens new window).

Tips

  • We encourage you to read Emma’s article(opens new window) about what’s great about working at Multiverse
  • Again, think about the context of your examples, the actions you took, and the results you achieved

Founder’s interview

In our final interview stage, you’ll meet our founder, Euan, or occasionally one of the other senior leadership team members. This is a good time to reflect on the people you’ve met so far, what you talked about, and what you’d bring to the company.

From there, it’s decision time for us! If we feel you would be a good addition to the team, one of our internal recruiters will be in touch with the good news. We really hope that you choose to join our team on its amazing journey. We’re just getting started!
